“Hamlet” at San Quentin State Prison
On June 15th, 2012, men in the Marin Shakespeare drama program at San Quentin, facilitated by Suraya Keating (Drama Instructor with Marin Shakespeare Company) and Lesley Currier (Managing Director of Marin Shakespeare Company), performed a poignant and powerful production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” to a standing-room only audience. The men’s performance drew a standing ovation as well as a few tears from audience members. In the ten months that the men had to prepare for this production, they cultivated skills of listening, self-expression, playfulness and working as a team to support one another.
“From Prison to Peru: A White Girl’s Journey Home”
In 2012-2013, Suraya toured her one-woman show throughout the Bay Area and at the United Solo Festival in New York City. In this powerfully heart-wrenching show, Suraya searches for a sense of “home” in an ever-changing world. The show brings to light with poignant honesty some shadow experiences of her human life: dating a drug addict, coping with her mother’s sudden death, working in prison, and delving into shamanism.
